When answers are posted

The NYT Spelling Bee resets at 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time (midnight Pacific). Our answers page picks up the new puzzle automatically within a few minutes. At the same moment, the previous day’s puzzle moves to the yesterday page and into the archive.

What’s on each answers page

  • The letters: the center letter and the six outer letters, drawn as a hive.
  • The totals: number of answers, total points and the points needed for Genius.
  • The pangram: with a first-letter and length clue before the reveal.
  • The hint grid and two-letter list: for working out missing words yourself.
  • The full answer list, grouped by length: open one length at a time.
  • A short FAQ with the day’s key facts.

How to use answers without spoiling the puzzle

  1. Start with hints. The hint grid shows how many words you’re missing by first letter and length.
  2. Reveal the pangram clue, not the pangram. The first letter and length are often enough.
  3. Open one word length at a time. If you’re missing two 6-letter words, open only the 6-letter group.
  4. Learn from the list afterward. Read the words you missed and say them out loud. They’ll come back in future puzzles.

Why some answers surprise people

The NYT word list is curated by an editor, so some real words are left out and some unusual ones are included. If an answer looks odd, it probably is: plant names, old-fashioned words and doubled-letter words show up a lot. We explain the pattern in why Spelling Bee rejects real words, and the most frequent repeats are in common Spelling Bee answers.

A note on our game vs. the NYT puzzle

The answers pages cover the NYT Spelling Bee. The game on our home page is our own: the daily board and unlimited mode use puzzles generated from our word list, so their answers are different. In our game, open Hints for help, or check yesterday’s words from the clock icon.
