The short version
- Spell Bee Free is a free spelling bee game: build words of 4+ letters from a 7-letter honeycomb, and every word must use the center letter.
- Unlike the one-a-day NYT puzzle, you can press New puzzle and keep playing as long as you like in Spelling Bee Unlimited mode.
- Short words score 1 point, longer words score 1 point per letter, and a pangram that uses all 7 letters earns 7 bonus points.

What is Spell Bee Free?
Spell Bee Free is a free browser version of the honeycomb word puzzle with no cap on how many games you play. You get seven letters arranged in a hive. The gold letter in the middle is mandatory, the six around it are optional, and letters can be used more than once. Find enough words and you climb the ranks from Beginner to Genius, and if you find every single one, Queen Bee.
The format will feel familiar if you play the daily NYT Spelling Bee. The difference is volume: the newspaper gives you one board per day, while this spelling bee online game hands you a new board every time you finish one. That makes it a handy warm-up before the daily puzzle, a way to keep going after you've hit Genius, and a low-pressure way to build vocabulary. If you're brand new, our Spelling Bee rules for beginners walks through a full example game.
How to play Spelling Bee in 4 steps
- Find the center letter. The gold letter in the middle of the hive has to appear in every word you make.
- Make a word of 4 or more letters. Tap the letters or type on your keyboard, then press Enter. You can reuse any letter.
- Watch your score climb. A 4-letter word is worth 1 point; longer words are worth 1 point per letter.
- Hunt for the pangram, then start a new puzzle. A word that uses all 7 letters earns a 7-point bonus. When you're done, press New puzzle for a fresh hive.

How scoring and ranks work
Points depend on word length, and your rank is a percentage of the puzzle's maximum score. A board with 40 words and a board with 70 words both put Genius at roughly 70% of the available points, so the ranks mean the same thing every game.
Points needed for each rank on the board above (how ranks are calculated):
Six habits of players who reach Genius
- Start with the obvious. Bank every short word you can see in the first minute. Easy points loosen up your memory for longer words.
- Pair the center letter with each outer letter. If the center is R, try every combo like TR-, -RT, AR-, -RA. It's a quick way to make sure you haven't skipped a whole family of words.
- Stack endings. One find like PLANT can unlock PLANTER, PLANTING and PLANTED if the letters allow it. Our word endings cheat sheet lists the ones that come up most.
- Shuffle when you stall. Rearranging the hive breaks the pattern your brain is stuck on.
- Look for the pangram before the halfway mark. The 7-point bonus often moves you up two ranks at once. Here's a 5-step pangram method.
- Use hints, not answers. The hint grid tells you how many words you're missing by first letter and length, so you still solve them yourself.
