Common Spelling Bee Answers That Show Up Again and Again

Key takeaways

  • Puzzles reuse common letters, so the same Spelling Bee words come back again and again.
  • In 1,500 puzzles from our generator, words like NOON, TOOT, ONION, INNING and TATTOO each appeared in about 1 of every 12 boards.
  • Doubled-letter words are the ones players miss most, because they look wrong at first glance.
  • Reviewing the words you miss each day is the fastest way to build your own list.

Every Spelling Bee has new letters, but not new words. Common letters like A, E, I, O, N, T, L and R show up constantly, and they keep producing the same answers. Learn those words and you’ll bank easy points in the first minute of every game.

Where this list comes from

We generated 1,500 puzzles with our game’s engine and counted how often each answer appeared. The words below are the ones that came up most, minus a few oddities. The most frequent answers appeared in about 1 of every 12 puzzles, which is a lot for a single word. The official NYT puzzle is hand-edited, so your experience there will differ a little, but the patterns hold.

The most frequent short words

These 4-letter words showed up the most. They’re worth only 1 point each, but they’re free points once you know to look for them.

Word Letters you need
NOON N, O
TOOT T, O
TINT T, I, N
NINE N, I, E
TILL / LILT / TILT T, I, L
ONTO / INTO O, N, T (+ I)
TALL T, A, L
TEEN / TENT T, E, N
TELL T, E, L
DEED / NEED D, E (+ N)

Notice that most of these use just two or three different letters. That’s why they appear so often: any hive containing those letters will have them.

Doubled-letter words players miss

Repeated letters look odd on screen, so people skip them. In our data, these were among the most common answers of any length:

  • INNING (one of the most frequent 6-letter answers)
  • TATTOO, COCOON, ROCOCO
  • ERROR, ROTOR, LOTTO
  • ATTAIN, INTENT, NEEDED
  • ALLOT, ATOLL, TALL, TELL, LOLL

Train yourself to try a doubled version of every short word you find: TOT → TOTE → TOOT → TATTOO.

-ION and -ING words

When the hive has the right letters, these endings produce a burst of long answers:

  • -ION: ONION, NOTION, NATION, NOTATION, ANNOTATION, INTONATION, UNION, TUITION
  • -ING: INNING, GOING, ICING, AGING, LINING, RINGING, GAINING, NAGGING

For a full set of endings, see the word endings cheat sheet.

Odd words worth memorizing

These aren’t words you use every day, but they come up again and again in honeycomb puzzles:

Word Meaning
ATOLL A ring-shaped coral island
LANAI A porch or veranda, common in Hawaii
LIANA A climbing vine in tropical forests
ANION A negatively charged ion
NIACIN Vitamin B3
TANNIN A compound found in tea and wine
ACACIA A tree or shrub
GENIE A spirit, as in a lamp
ALOE The succulent plant
TOFFEE The candy

How to build your personal word list

Your blind spots are personal, so your best list is your own:

  1. After each puzzle, open the full answers (for the NYT puzzle, today’s answers or the answer archive).
  2. Copy down only the words you didn’t find.
  3. Review the list once a week, out loud.

After a month, you’ll see the same words on your list over and over. Those are the ones that will push you from Amazing to Genius.
